Der Südwesten ist eine Region von Kontrasten. Auf dieser Halbinsel, gleich südlich von Wales, spielen die Strände eine absolute Hauptrolle. Wo auch immer man geht, eine spektakuläre Szenerie und wunderschöne Küste bietet sich an.

An der Küste kann man spazieren gehen, Sandstrände, dramatische Steilküste, abgelegene Buchten und pitorestke Fishdörfer entdecken. Im Landesinneren gibt es prehistorische Orte wie das weltberühmte Stonehenge, Städte mit Pubs direkt am Flussufer, herrschaftliche Anwesen mit prächtigen Gärten oder die großen und zahlreichen wundervollen Parks von Exmoor und Dartmoor.

In dieser Region befindet sich auch die Stadt Bristol, wo sich schon immer ein sehr aktives soziales und wirtschaftliches Leben abgespielt hat, teilweise aufgrund ihrer strategischen Position als Abfahrts- und Ankunftspunkt von transatlantischen Schiffen zwischen Europa und Amerika. Majestätische Kathedralen schmücken Städte wie Salisbury, Gloucester, Wells, Truro und Exeter. In Bath trifft man auf bekannte römische Ruinen und auf den Reichtum aus der Zeit Königs Georgs. Plymouth ist geprägt von der maritimem Geschichte durch die Wallfahrten und die Abfahrt des Seglers Sir Francis Drake.
