Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides

Situées aux confins de l'Europe, les îles Hébrides se caractérisent par leur beauté sauvage naturelle. Elles se composent de plages préservées, d'une faune et d'une flore abondante ainsi que d'une culture et de traditions uniques. Nombre de ces qualités se retrouvent également dans les archipels d'Orkney et des Shetland, situés au nord où vous rencontrez, de surcroît, quelques-uns des sites archéologiques les plus fascinants et les plus impressionnants d'Europe. Ces derniers peuvent être aperçus dans les tertres funéraires, les cercles de pierre et les colonies d'implantation des premiers habitants de cette région. Les influences norvégiennes sur ces îles sont évidentes.

Tel un souvenir du passé scandinave, le festival 'Up Helly Aa' est organisé chaque année. Il met en scène une procession composée d'un millier de fêtards portant des torches, d'une troupe de Vikings aux casques à cornes et d'un navire viking traîné à travers les rues de Lerwick, avant d'être brûlé au cours d'une cérémonie. Sans aucun doute, on retrouve bien plus qu'une touche de mythe et d'histoire dans cette célébration exceptionnelle. A l'heure actuelle, les îles ne sont plus, depuis bien longtemps, envahies par les vikings mais bien par des milliers d'oiseaux et autres gibiers, qui ont fait de ces îles leur point d'encrage.
