Er zijn heidegronden om te wandelen, bergen om te beklimmen, heuvels en valleien, wouden en akkergronden, zodat je hier elk type van landschap in Groot-Brittannië kan aantreffen. In Schotland ben je nooit ver verwijderd van een meer of van de zee, die een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de natie. Je vindt er tal van maritieme musea, zoals het 'Scottish Fisheries Museum' in Anstruther, en het 'Maritime Museum' in Aberdeen dat een fascinerend verhaal over olie weet te vertellen. De lage bevolkingsdichtheid bewijst dat vele dorpen en steden nooit zijn uitgebreid en hun charme hebben behouden die zo vaak verloren gaat wanneer nationale ketens het overnemen.
Vele lokale handelaars slagen er nog steeds in om te floreren door lokale producten aan te bieden in combinatie met een traditionele dienstverlening. In Schotland vind je natuurlijk ook tal van steden met hun nachtleven en cultuur. Maar zelfs als je midden in Edinburgh, Glasgow of Aberdeen zit, ben je nooit ver weg van de rust van het platteland, zodat je van beide werelden kan genieten. Afgezien van de voor zich sprekende aantrekkingskracht van het natuurschoon, komen vele mensen ook naar Schotland om te genieten van het rijke erfgoed, waarvan de kastelen en distilleerderijen een prima voorbeeld zijn. Vele van deze stokerijen zijn vrij toegankelijk voor het publiek en bieden rondleidingen en proeverijen aan. |
