Belangrijke attracties zijn het Peak District National Park, Robin Hood en Sherwood Forest, de historische Romeinse stad Lincoln, Leicester’s National Space Centre, Rutland Water en Althorp House, waar zich de laatste rustplaats bevindt van Diana, Princess of Wales.
In Lincoln ligt een buitengewone middeleeuwse kathedraal die vooral gekend is voor haar prachtige buitenaanzicht, met specifiek het westelijke deel met haar rijke detail in sculpturen. In de middeleeuwse overblijfselen van Lincoln Castle, kan je tentoonstellingen bezoeken over het Magna Charta en een reconstructie van een gevangeniskapel.
Nottingham is voor de meeste bezoekers dan weer gekend omwille van de associatie met de legendes van Robin Hood. De 'Tales of Robin Hood' laten je kennis maken met het 'echte' verhaal achter de legendes, en je kan er ook genieten van een middeleeuws banket.
In het 'Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre' kan je kijken naar de 'Major Oak', waar volgens de overlevering Robin Hood en zijn manschappen verzamelden.
Maar Nottingham heeft meer te bieden dan Robin Hood alleen, de stad heeft ook een lange traditie als centrum van de kantindustrie. In het 'Lace Centre' kan je op zoek gaan naar de geschiedenis van kant in Nottingham en zelfs een poging wagen om het zelf te vervaardigen. Het middeleeuwse Nottingham Castle is nu een stadsmuseum en een kunstencentrum, en het nabijgelegen 'Costume and Textile Museum' stelt kledij tentoon van de laatste 200 jaar. |
